Local Flavours: The Art of Mauritian Cuisine
Mauritius is known for its fine sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and dreamy tropical climate, but there's more than that! Let's not forget about the rich local cuisine, brimming with tropical fruits and vegetables, spices with vibrant colors and pronounced flavours, and other local products. How to miss such a blend of exotic and unique aromas? At Le Chamarel Restaurant, we celebrate a reimagined creole cuisine.
Le Chamarel Restaurant Panoramic View
Perched atop the picturesque village of Chamarel, our restaurant is a must-visit during your stay. Indeed, the panoramic view to the southwest is exceptional, with Le Morne on one side and Le Tourelle de Tamarin on the other. Over 180 degrees, lush greenery merges delicately with the azure ocean. But what you absolutely mustn't miss is our reinterpreted Mauritian cuisine, showcased through a tasting menu crafted by our team.
Discovering our signature menu
Mauritian cuisine is diverse and rich, and our signature menu "La Table Créole" invites you on a journey of discovery. Begin with the famous "gadjacks," typical of the island, such as fritters, samosas, or “Gato Pima”—a trio of appetizers to tantalize your taste buds. The journey continues with a palm heart salad, a local delicacy from the Chamarel region. Paired with mango sauce, marinated shrimp, and other condiments, it's a plate full of freshness awaiting our guests. Considered a delicate dish, palm heart is usually enjoyed raw or in salads and remains highly favored by locals, especially during end of year festivities.
Local Plate for a taste of Mauritius
The choice of main course reflects the island's multiculturalism and abundance of discoveries. From traditional chicken and shrimp curry to the deer curry, known as “dry curry”, of Case Noyale, each dish served with rice and other accompaniments brings back the essence of Mauritian cuisine. Rice plays a central role and is widely enjoyed as an accompaniment. For those looking to explore beyond the ordinary, there's wild boar salmi from Bel Ombre or vegetable curry that will delight your palate. Complement your meal with an assortment of condiments like coconut chutney, tamarind and coriander, or lemon salsa, enhancing the flavors of each dish.
Ending on a sweet note
To end your meal on a sweet note, choose from desserts like a caramelized banana rum verrine or an assortment of exotic fruit sorbets with a delicious tamarind coulis. From savory to sweet, local and seasonal products take center stage. Emphasizing local cuisine with ingredients sourced from regions like Case Noyale or Bel Ombre, we commit to supporting local producers.
In a setting like ours, how could one not be enchanted by both the view and the culinary journey? Whether with friends or family, discovering or rediscovering a refined and carefully reimagined creole cuisine is an experience not to be missed.
